The Ultimate Guide to Exploring the Mara Triangle

Learn all about the Mara Triangle, a month-to-month guide, the wildlife highlights, and why the Mara Triangle and Enkishui Safari Camp should be on your safari bucket list.

Why the Mara Triangle?

The Mara Triangle is considered to be one of the best safari destinations in Africa. Forming the quieter, more exclusive western section of the Masai Mara National Reserve, the Mara Triangle offers great wildlife sightings, along with beautiful landscapes and some of the best photographic opportunities.

While most visitors think of the Masai Mara as one big reserve, the Mara Triangle actually stands apart. Bordered by the Mara River to the East, the Oloololo escarpment to the west, and the Tanzanian border to the south, it naturally forms a wedge that we know as the Mara Triangle.

If you are planning a safari to the Mara Triangle, this guide will help you understand why the Mara Triangle deserves a place at the top of your list.

Where is the Mara Triangle

Situated in the South Western part of the main reserve, the Triangle borders the Serengeti National Park. Unlike other parts of the reserve that are managed by different conservancies, the Triangle is run by the Mara Conservancy. The Management structure helps to maintain stricter conservation standards, better road maintenance, and also carefully control vehicle numbers. The result is a safari experience that feels more exclusive than other parts of the Masai Mara

Big Cats

There are a few places that rival the Mara Triangle when it comes to big cat sightings. Lions dominate the open plains and are often seen resting under the scattered acacia trees or moving through the open plains. Leopards favour the thicker riverine areas, and cheetahs prefer the open plains where they can use their speed for hunting.

The Great Migration

This is one of the most spectacular events on Earth. Each year, over 2 million wildebeest, zebra, and antelope move between the Serengeti and the Masai Mara in search of fresh food. The Mara Triangle plays an important part in this movement, especially during the dramatic river crossings.

Year-round Wildlife

While the migration draws much of the attention, the Mara Triangle offers incredible wildlife sightings throughout the year. You can regularly see elephants and giraffes browsing along the plains, or a large buffalo herd grazing together. You can also see other wildlife like hyenas, jackals, and other fascinating predators like servals. Even outside of the migration season, the density of wildlife remains incredible.

Best time to visit

Although Enkshui Safari Camp is a seasonal camp open from July to November, the Mara Triangle is a great safari destination year-round; different seasons offer different experiences.

January

This is one of the warmest months of the year in the Masai Mara. Although not as rainy as December, you can still expect some rainfall during January. This is the best time to visit if you are a bird enthusiast, and this is also the calving season in the Mara.

February

This is the best month to visit if you want to avoid the crowds. You will also see huge numbers of baby animals, and it is a fantastic time for photographers to visit!

March

This can be a rainy month. You can expect some thundershowers in the afternoon, and floods is a possibility.

April

This is the time of year with the most rainfall. It is slightly cooler than March, but you can still expect warm days. This is the period of the "long rains", so a lot of the camps will close down during this time.

May

The rain has slowed down, but it can still be very wet. Be prepared for muddy roads, a flooded river, and an almost persistent drizzle during the day.

June

This marks the end of the "long rains" and the start of the busy season. The days are cooler than any other time of the year. The vegetation will still be very lush, and the anticipation for the herd to arrive is high!

"Throughout August, the potential for river crossings remains strong, and it is just a great time of year to be in the presence of millions of animals deciding when they can cross."

July

From mid-July, the bulk of the herd is starting to move into the northern Serengeti (Tanzania). Many of them will now face the mostly dry Sand River as they cross into the Masai Mara. From there, they will start moving northwest, where they will encounter the Mara River. This is where some of the dramatic river crossings can occur.

August

Throughout August, the potential for river crossings remains strong, and it is just a great time of year to be in the presence of thousands of animals deciding when and where they can cross. The plains around you come alive, and you quickly realise it is not just the great migration and crossings that experience change during this time of year.

September

By September, most of the wildebeest and zebra should have made their journey across the Sand and Mara Rivers, and are now in the Masai Mara and Mara Triangle. However, nature rarely follows our calendar, it is still very possible for a few river crossings during this month. But what makes this month so special is seeing the thousands of animals spread across the plains.

October

This is one of the hottest months of the year. Most of the wildebeest herd should still be around, but slowly making their way back to Tanzania. End of October is also the beginning of the "short rains", and you can expect to see some dramatic skies during this time.

November

The short rains trigger the final movement of the migration, and the herds move into the Serengeti to make their way down south for their calving season.

December

It can be busy at the beginning of the month and over the festive period, but wildlife viewing is still great during this time of year

Why stay at Enkishui Safari Camp

There are only a few camps in the Mara Triangle, which definitely helps with the area’s exclusivity.

Enkishui Safari camp is one of the most well-positioned camps in the Mara. Situated along the banks of the Mara River, it has incredible access to wildlife and is only a few minutes' drive to some of the best crossing points in the whole of Mara. For photographers, location is key, and Enkishui Safari Camp's location means that you are just minutes away from the most productive areas in the reserve.

After a full day out on safari, you return to the camp and enjoy your time around the fire as the hippos call from the river, and the night sounds come alive!

Why the Mara Triangle should be on your safari bucketlist

The Masai Mara is famous for a good reason, but it is the Mara Triangle that offers something a little bit different.

It combines a world-class wildlife viewing that the mara is known for, with a quieter, more exclusive safari experience. The Mara Triangle has fewer crowds and less vehicles, along with stunning landscapes and incredible wildlife sightings, making it one of the best safari destinations in Africa.
